You Know You’re In New York even just briefly for a Conference (and in must now see hipster Brooklyn, to be taken advantage of even more briefly after being in Manhattan for a conference) when…
…there are umpteen food fads staring and glaring at you from every grocery store – not that this is unfamiliar in UK, it’s just the breadth and depth of brands and products on show that stands out quite literally
…there are healthy and innovative food products for on-the-go or in just more original or convenient formats
…there is also a lot of pairing up of key health fad ingredients in what could appear to be a blatant cashing in on trends just in case their true nutritional benefits are rendered myths by the soon-to-be-latest research(?!). Some worked though, and there is certainly an impressive level of inventiveness in variant stretching, but pure coconut and caffeine hyped coffee? really? surely that’s a contradiction…
…restaurants also seem to be doing a fair bit of pairing up, offering different combinations of single ingredients in an attempt to stand out from a very crowded market
…trendy bars and cafes are also battling it out in the originality stakes, serving up unusual concoctions in what seems like an blatant effort to out-do each other – and these sell too! Even if they are (honestly) unpalatable!
…everyone also seems to be consuming vast amounts of broth, that’s ‘liquid’ cooked up from bones and minimal vegetables for taste!
…(and) there is always a new exercise on very public display too – and this time it was yoga, yoga, yoga.
…slogans and hashtags come at you from blackboards as well as billboards
…you could be forgiven for thinking that Air B’n’B is fully legitimate here, given how very established it is, and yet really it’s apparently almost illegal but still worth trying out as such a fun way to get a slice of local views too
…there seems to be ever more buzzing down and around the bridges and river [Hudson]
…Americans really do seem to be out of central casting and ready to be scouted, and people love to show off as they dare to risk standing (both illegally and precariously) on the High Line, just to get That Shot that they will no doubt share across all and every social media with which they have an account, and ideally something more public than that;
…you may not be in the home of the selfie, but people all around you have embraced the concept, with NYC the place for simply zillions of selfies to be taken, with and without the use of selfie sticks which are sold on most street corners in case you didn’t yet have one;
…art is all around, on the street, on the side of buildings, just everywhere, sometimes as art, sometimes as art-chitecture
…the 24-hour reputation is still alive and kicking, with much of life going on by night as by day, even things for which you would think daylight could be required!
– everyone has to commute, and that includes the Hasidic jews risking the traffic of 8th avenue to catch their bus out to the suburbs;
…cool guys really do still manage to walk with their trousers slung low around their hips, revealing trendy Designer underpants for all to admire;
…(and other) people do walk (too) – even kids!
…(in conclusion) you find yourself truly entranced, as the cityscape rushes around you, the city always seems to be innovating, and it always feels like you’re walking either on or off a film set!
It’s up to you New York, New York!
